More Time…

We find ourselves increasingly in need of God’s power to be able to stand in this generation. Political Correctness and secularisation have marginalised Christians and we’re being pressed. The demonic forces want to exclude the name of the Lord Jesus Christ from everyday life so that the unbeliever has no chance of turning from his sins or being healed.

What should we do? We need to spend more time with God being empowered by the Holy Spirit. The days when Christians spent less than ten minutes a day in prayer, didn’t read their Bibles regularly and didn’t spend time in worship except on Sunday’s have gone. If you’re a Christian and don’t have a serious devotional life, pretty soon you’ll find yourself being blown all over the place in a storm.

The TV and Internet have swamped us with information overload and the “spirit of this age” has dragged us down. My advice is to switch off your TV set (or get rid of it), limit the amount of negative news you take in daily, stop wasting time on the Internet and get down to some serious prayer.

Here are my prayer tips for 2010:

1) Build up your prayer muscle: every day, do five minutes extra in prayer. If you’re only used to 15 minutes, don’t try and do 2 hours. Build up gradually, adding 5 or 10 mins per day until you reach your goal.

2) Expect opposition: before you launch into your prayer session you WILL (repeat WILL) experience opposition, from your own flesh and perhaps from the enemy. Prayer seems like the most undesirable thing to do before you do it, but when you finish it you will certainly NOT regret it. Time spent in prayer is NEVER wasted.

3) Pray outwardly: you may have a host of problems yourself. Learn to be outward looking and pray for others. God knows what you need, just mention in. Focusing on your own situation too much can negatively magnify it for some personality types. By blessing others you play into a spiritual dynamic that will bless you too.

4) Mix it up: Ask God what He wants you to pray for, mix in some worship times in the prayer session, sit in silence receiving from the Lord, read the Word of God, speak out some key Bible verses, etc... Try and add variety to your prayer times.

5) A Thankful Heart: Very underestimated part of your prayer life. Always give thanks to God. This pleases Him, puts you in a good mood and, importantly, increases your faith as you remember what He's done for you. Don't underestimate this part of your prayer life.

6) Get rid of unforgiveness: You're wasting your time if you enter the prayer room with unforgiveness. If you've got unforgiveness, pray into this and humbly ask God's help to forgive them. Bless them in Jesus name. If you don't forgive, you may never have a strong spiritual life no matter how much time you spend in prayer.
